Bringing Excellence In Quality

Year 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of SOUTHERN STEEL BERHAD ("SSB"), formerly known as Southern Iron & Steel Works. SSB founded by Southern Rubber, Guan Aik Moh and Hong Bee Hardware in 1963. Work began on its galvanized sheet plant in Nibong Tebal in 1964 and production started a year later. This was followed by a rolling mill and a pipe factory.

In 1980, NatSteel of Singapore was invited to be the technical partner for a quantum leap initiative. Hong Leong Malaysia also became a partner in 1981 when its proposed steel mill project was merged with SSB. The 1980s saw rapid expansion with the acquisition of Southern Pipe, Southern Wire and the building of Steel Making Plant.

In 1993, SSB was listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, followed by the acquisition of Southern Steel Mesh and other major expansions by the group companies.
